Father's Day 2012
I have a couple of self
imposed rules with this 52 Series. 1: No over stylised photo shoots, get the
family in their natural settings. But this week I am breaking my own rule. Only
because I cannot resist sharing how adorable these images turned out.
I started an idea last year
on fathers Day; I want to do a photo shoot of Justin and Jarvis each year with
a theme. Last year they were lions, this year they both got to ride their main
loves.
Oh, and another rule of mine
has been not to complement the children's looks. Obviously everyone's children
are beautiful, that goes without saying, but after reading an article. ‘How to
Talk to Girls’. (I think in this day and age it also should include boys, as
boys/men are also placed under so much pressure based on looks and body)
The article made me stop and
think, part of Jodi's idea for this series was to help people improve their
photography. So, I wanted to look at the images deeper; lighting, positioning,
cropping, what is going on in the image. How has the photographer approached
the subject? So my comments have been my effort for me not to resort to
"cute kid".
PS, I am the cluckiest person
on earth so I think all of your children are cute!
Jodi over at Che
and Fidel has inspired me to pick up my camera and
turn the focus inward. Since I already take 100s of photos of my children each
week, so I thought I would twist the idea a little. What I never seem to get is
group shots, images of the family together, whether it is my two children,
Tamika and Jarvis, or me with the kids, or shots of Justin and I. So I am going
to challenge myself to get one image of "my family" per
week.
Boys and their toys. Love these shots. xx
ReplyDeleteHa, Caroline, do not call Justin' bike a toy! Oh no! We call it the WIFE!
DeleteI know that article you mean, it was a good one.
ReplyDeletebuuuut I cannot help myself commenting how gorgeous others are sometimes. like these two here, they're just adorable :)
I know, it is really hard. But I compromise, for the 52 images, look at the 'other'. But for any other post I allow my true mushiness to show through
DeleteOMG these are my favourite of yours so far! I love love love love them! You are on my best of 36 list for sure my lovely! xxxxxx
ReplyDeleteThank you. This is my "work" style of photoshooting.
DeleteThey are brilliant. Love the idea and what gorgeous shots.
ReplyDeleteThank you :). I am hoping I can continue it for years to come
DeleteI absolutely love that first shot - spectacular!
ReplyDeleteThank you :)
DeleteWhat a creative and brilliant idea! It will certainly be a special series these are to be a part of. Would make a lovely book for both of them in the years to come. xx
ReplyDeleteI have so many ideas I am either going to have to photograph other Father son dues of keep this going until Jarvis is a Dad himself
DeleteI ADORE that second shot ... they both have matching intense expressions ... it's FABULOUS!!
ReplyDeletexx
They actually match allot, they are so similar.
DeleteI particularly like the light in your first photo.
ReplyDeleteI read that talking to girls article when my daughter was just a little baby and my husband and I used to joke around and say to her "aren't you dexterous" instead of cute/gorgeous/beautiful.
I also have taken the advice to ask young girls what they are reading and it has lead to some more interesting conversations than the usual banal interactions.
Thanks for the reminder, I am off to re-read the piece.
I tell all kids all of the time that they are gorgeous. yet with the re-reading of the article I wanted to see if I could make comments about other people' photography with out resorting to the banal "cute kid' option.
DeleteThe lighting in this space is amazing, all dark and moody on one side and the other is flooded with natural light. A photographer's dream
I love these! Especially that second 2013 shot...amazing! And Jarvis is just about the cutest lion I have ever seen!
ReplyDeleteI almost wet myself with laughter last year as Justin walked through the Mt Cootha Botanical Gardens wearing his lion outfit. He is normally a shy person, but in the end he was playing it up for all of the other kids wanting to talk and touch him.
DeleteI have so many images from this years shoot that I love, it was hard to pick just two.
wow, that 2nd shot of them, ready to race is powerful. and wonderful x
ReplyDeleteThank you.It is one of my favourites from the day. Love their faces.
DeleteSo glad that these were mentioned by Jodi. These Jarvis 'n Daddy shots are great. Especially love the moto photos. They will both cherish these for a long time!
ReplyDeleteThank you, I love them too! It is something I want to continue for years..
DeleteThese are just stunning Julie (not sure how I missed them before).
ReplyDeleteThank you. But it helps that I had stunning models
DeleteThose motorbike photos are AMAZING! I just love these. They're frameable!!!
ReplyDeleteBoth boys are obsessed with their bikes, so I guess it makes sense to do a photoshoot with them
DeleteOh my! Them on their bikes is too cute!
ReplyDeleteThank you. They are both cuties!
Deleteso great photos!!!
