LEAVING MY COMFORT ZONE

How do you know when it is time to move? Or time to stay. I have spoken about the issues with this house before; now the owners may or may not be selling. We feel we are living in limbo.

When I travel I am adventurous, and love the thrill of the unknown. Travelling to countries and immersing myself in the culture. The unexpected is what I crave. Yet at home, I like a life of simplistic pursuits. I like to garden, to sew, to blog, and most importantly be at home with Jarvis. One of the main things that 'holds' me to this house is this was our first home. This was the house where Jarvis was born.

I went and looked at yet another rental today. The first question I always ask myself as I enter a possible new house, “can I see myself being happy here?” There were good and there were bad things about this house. How do you know when it is time to leave your comfort zone?

A dream is your creative vision
for your life in the future.
You must break out of your
current comfort zone and
become comfortable with
the unfamiliar and the unknown.

This was Jarvis's room back when he was Dim Sim

The dinning room where each night we sit and talk.

  1. I hate it when you've made your house into a home and the landlord decides to sell. Or not. So disappointing. And some of them are so slack on getting basic maintenance in order! Ours isn't too bad but are balking at getting carpets replaced and the retaining wall fixed. Nothing like your flooding though!

    1. I have never lived in a house so poorly maintained by the owners. Yet it is our home. We have made it ours, We have filled the walls with memories and I feel torn

  2. I hated renting so much for this reason, we had it happen twice in under two years. I hope it means a move to a home that is more comfortable for you.

    1. Problem is we cannot afford to buy, nor can we really afford to move. One thing we do get with this house is slightly cheaper rent. The rental market in Brisbane is tough. Dozen of people turn up to each inspection fighting over the rentals. Hence why the landlords can charge huge amounts.

  3. I feel your pain, lady! We currently rent from a family member - problem #1. It's so poorly maintained (carpets haven't been replaced in nearly 10 years, the shower leaks, the garden floods & there's been no vermin/insect proofing done in the 3 years that we've lived here) by the owners that we've been putting our own time & money into maintaining it. They're also selling/not selling/selling again, & I'm so sick of having strangers traipsing through our home every other weekend. Yet I'm in love with our place. This is our first home & were married here so it really is a part of us.
    I know that torn feeling.

    Rant. Over.

    1. I have no idea when, if the carpets have been replaced here, lots of floor showing through. I have painted several of the rooms and totally re-done the backyard. It was a danger zone when we moved in (we were promised time and time again it would be removed). My, our main concern is the flooding which has caused extensive damage downstairs to the house structurally and to our belongings. Plus there is the constant damp and mould. However, it a beautiful house. I just wish the owners would care about it

  4. Its a really hard one, particularly the sentimentality we attach ourselves with our homes. Sometimes, I think it is a case of having to move on than wanting to, you may well find the almost-perfect house if you do keep looking. I completely relate to your feeling when it comes to the adventure of travel vs the comfort of home soil.x

    1. Then maybe you can answer, why it is when I travel difference is what i crave, but at home the sense of same gives such comfort? Seems to be a contradiction

    2. Now that, I don't know, because I am the same, and can't answer for myself either!

  5. We have had two houses now. When we were house hunting, I found we knew right away when we came to the right houses. That's after seeing a lot of not-so-good choices. Your rooms are lovely. :)

    1. It is hard when renting, the market is so saturated that the rent is really high for the quality. If we were buying it would not be as bad. I tend to walk through houses thinking, "oh I could do this and this and this", then realise it is a rental, I cannot do any of what I think would improve a home

  6. I have moved way too many times the last 3 years (I think 5 times). To be honest, it's been exhausting. But, now, I've been living in the new house we've moved in and I feel so good. What thing goes where, more places for Nereus to explore, meeting new people...I love these things! Good luck to you guys!

    1. That's a lot of moving, especially since you would have been pregnant and have Nereus for most of those moves.

  7. Moving is so hard - esp when it comes time to leave the home you first brought your bubba home to! We went through that last year when we moved countries and it was harder then I expected. Good luck mama, I hope it all works out without too much stress

    1. Wow, I am worried about moving houses and you moved countries. That would have been full on stress for me.

  8. Soooo sorry you will be moving, would it help to have some photos of the way you are keeping the house so nicely and the care and improvements you have undertaken in the yard, for the next property manager to consider you as ideal tenants.

    1. That is actually a really good idea. We have done so much work, which has improved the value of this property so much.
