TOURIST IN MY OWN CITY: BRISBANE BOTANICAL GARDENS, MT COOT-THA

I am continuing the Tourist Tuesday this week with a visit to Brisbane Botanical Gardens. Brisbane has two gardens, one in the city and the other at Mt Coot-tha. Both are managed and maintained by Brisbane City Council. Mt Coot-tha has free parking so we tend to visit this garden more.

The city Gardens were established in 1855, and the gardens at Mt Coot-tha in 1970. Mt Coot-tha gardens feature more than 20 000 plants, with highlights including Tropical Dome, Fern House, Japanese Gardens, Bonsai House, Hide ‘n’ Seek Children’s Trail, Exotic Rainforest, Australian Rainforest, Arid Zone and Cactus House, Lagoon and Bamboo Groove, and the Temperature Gardens, Fragrant Plant and Herb Garden.

When Tamika was a toddler, I use to bring her here for picnics and to explore the pathways. Now Jarvis is old enough we are continuing the tradition. We each have our favourite areas. Tamika loves the roses and the Fragrant Plant and Herb Garden, Jarvis loves the pond with the ducks and other wild life, and my favourites are the Japanese Gardens and the Arid Zone and Cactus House.

We pack a picnic lunch, and after stuffing ourselves, and feeding the left overs to the ducks, we all set off exploring the trails and gardens.

Jarvis is so tactile, he loves to touch all of the plants

Even the odd looking plants he likes to touch.

The gardens are open every day from 8am to 5:30pm

  1. I love gardens, they've always been so calming and refreshing (except that time a bee was chasing me, but that's a whole other story) This place looks breath taking. Nothing has really bloomed here except for tulips so I may wait another month or so to go. Thank you for sharing this with us <3

  3. What a beautiful place! I haven't been in Athens's botanical garden since I was so young that I don't even remember it! I should definitely take Nereus there! He's gonna love it!
